Welcome to Beginning Photo
Overview: This is an introductory course to basic photography in how it relates to visual arts. In this class, students will explore a variety photographic techniques to develop criteria for taking effective photographs. Over the course of the semester, students will learn the elements and principles of art/design and keep a visual journal (sketchbook) of ideas and engagement in the arts. Students will utilize in-class demonstrations, online resources and independent research to complete coursework.
Materials: Students need to come to class prepared with their digital cameras, any camera accessories (cables, memory cards etc.) sketch books, a pencil and their personal computers every day.
You are responsible for your workspace, camera and/or storage area, please be respectful to your classmates by keeping your materials in your space and organized.
Grading: Your grade will be determined by the following categories:
Sketches (5 pts/week graded on Monday)
Exams and Quizzes (100/exam and 50/quizzes)
Projects (each worth 200 pts)
Participation (50 pts)
Artist Statements: For every project completed, students will turn in a digital artist statement. An artist statement explains the assignment based in the intentions of the artist (you) and should be at least two paragraphs long. How you created your work (what materials were used) and why you chose to create the work in the ways that you did (your intentionality – see day one PPT). Imagine this as something that describes the work without you having to be there.
*The artist statement will be a part of the total project grade.
Participation: A grade will be given based on student participation in class. Student’s will start the semester with 50 participation points. Inappropriate classroom behavior, music infractions, distracting other students, misuse of computers etc. will result in a loss of points.
Exams and Quizzes: Exams and quizzes will be announced a week prior. They will cover technical information such as vocabulary, techniques and presentation information.
Projects: During the introduction to each project students will receive a rubric explaining the way they will be graded and the breakdown of points for each aspect of the assignment.
Absences: If a student is absent they are responsible for making up the work. Students should check the class website at the end of the school day, email Mr. England or contact another student in the class to figure out what they missed.
Finishing Class work: All class work will need to be finished to receive a final grade for the course. Missing or incomplete work will result in a zero.
Emergency Procedures: In case of a fire or fire drill we will leave the room quietly through the front classroom door and out of the building to the right. We will then form a class line next to the student parking lot.
In case of a tornado we will move into two groups into the kiln room and the storage room behind the sink wall.
In case of a lock down we will follow ALICE protocol by blocking the classroom do, sitting out of sight, and if necessary leaving through the patio door out to the student parking lot. Meetup in the event of such an evacuation will be in the front yard of the SHOWA building across the street as soon as possible.
